It's because of incorrect environment or x-unikey starting to late in
the session: you have to use an supported UTF-8 environement when
starting x-unikey and it has to start right at the begining of the
Xwindow session, before Gnome.

It's working fine, except there is still some annoyance with the input
becoming stuck in some applications (like OOo or Firefox) using the XIM
method.

But, if you want to use it anyway, please read the full instructions on
the wiki, even the Debian ones, and also the changes added in here:
http://www.hanoilug.org/ubuntu/dists/edgy/contrib/pool/x-unikey_1.0.4-5.diff.gz

Look especialy at the 59unikey script (to put in /etc/X11/Xsession.d)
and the default values we did select for Unikey (this is important !).
Note that this work is not only mine but is the result of a team work. :-)


Now we are looking after the more general input method SCIM. I have just
packaged the 1.3.4 version for Edgy. This version was recommanded by Lê
Quốc Thái who found that it begins to support Telex with free typing
(accent at the end of a word). There is still a bunch of little bugs
though... So it's not a perfect replacement for x-unikey yet.
